Slack

Approvals, HR notifications and a daily who's-out post in Slack

Messaging / Requires Core HR

Approvers decide time off and other requests from a Slack message. Tasks, mentions, kudos and reminders arrive as direct messages, and a channel you choose gets a list of who's out that day. HR updates reach people in the tool they already use.

Capabilities

What the integration adds to Slack

Requests get decided where people already talk, and updates stop getting lost in an inbox nobody checks. More than 500 companies use PeopleForce with Slack.

Approvals in a direct message

When a time-off, overtime or other request reaches someone's step, they get a message saying what is waiting for them, with the leave type and dates for time off, plus Approve and Reject. One click records the decision in PeopleForce and updates the message. Over the past year, more than 150,000 time-off decisions were made from Slack.

Notifications for tasks, mentions, kudos and surveys

New tasks, mentions in comments, kudos with their message, survey invitations, review kick-offs, nudges and a reminder ten minutes before a 1:1 arrive as direct messages from the PeopleForce app. Announcements come too when the author ticks Notify via Slack. Each message links back to the item.

A daily who's-out post in a channel

Pick a channel, the days and the time, and PeopleForce posts who is away that day with their leave type, plus any public holidays. You decide which leave types count; private ones show only as working or non-working.

Mechanics

What moves between PeopleForce and Slack

Almost everything moves from PeopleForce to Slack, the moment something happens or at the time you set. The one thing Slack sends back is an approver's decision, which PeopleForce records as if it were made on the request itself.

Setup

How the connection is set up

An administrator switches Slack on for the company and adds the who's-out post to a channel. Each person then connects their own Slack account once to get messages and buttons.

Messages and approvals

Switch on, then connect once

Settings → Integrations → Slack bot → Install, by a PeopleForce administrator.

  • Each person connects their Slack account in Preferences → Integrations → Slack, or from the link the app sends when they run a command such as /peopleforce balance

  • If your workspace restricts apps, Slack asks a Slack admin to approve PeopleForce first

  • From then on, their approvals and notifications arrive in Slack

Who's-out post

Pick a channel and a schedule

Settings → Integrations → Slack "who's out" notification channel → Install, by a PeopleForce administrator.

  • Choose the Slack channel when you allow access

  • Set the notification days, the time and the leave types to include

  • For a private channel, add the PeopleForce app to it

Integration conditions

Who gets messages, what people can do from Slack, and which side keeps the record.

Who gets messages

Messages reach people who have connected their Slack account, in their PeopleForce language. The who's-out post uses the company's default language and time zone.

What people can do from Slack

Approve or reject their own step on a request, and run the read-only /peopleforce commands. Submitting requests, filling in forms, signing documents and answering surveys happen in PeopleForce, through the link in each message.

PeopleForce stays the source of truth

Every decision is recorded in PeopleForce, and the person who asked hears the outcome there and by email. Nothing else written in Slack comes back, and Slack statuses and profiles are left alone.
